THE PRINCE OF PEACE by Dr. Harold Sala For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6, KJV The world just hasnt gotten the message. Seven centuries before Jesus was born, Isaiah said that one of His titles is Prince of Peace; yet the very place of His birth, Bethlehem, has been the scene of strife and bloodshed in recent days. A few weeks ago I made my way to the Church of the Nativity, the oldest church in Christendom, the site of Jesus birthplace. I hasten to add that the weight of tradition is on the side of authenticity. In all probability this is the place where Jesus was born. After Helen, the mother of Constantine, was converted in 325 AD, she went to Palestine, as the country was then known, and identified a number of holy sites. The site of Jesus birth was high on her list of priorities. The task wasnt too difficult, however. Hadrian, the Roman Emperor, had built a pagan temple there towards the end of the first century. To preserve the site? No! To keep Christians from coming there to worship. He simply succeeded in marking the spot for the centuries to come. In the fourth century a church was built on the site. Its still there, replete with candles, holy water, and centuries of religious trappings including pictures, candles, artifacts, and items that nobody seemed to want to discard …
