What Does the Bible Say About Curses?

Are curses real or are they just imaginary concepts from a superstitious culture?

Does the Bible talk about curses and, if so, what does it say?

The Bible does, indeed, talk about curses. Curses are very real and affect our lives. So, what does the Bible say about curses?

1. A curse without a cause will not alight.

Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, So a curse without cause does not alight (Proverbs 26:2)

So people can send curses your way, but if there is no legal entry way for the demon carrying the curse, to penetrate your shield, and attach himself to you, then the curse will not be able to attach itself to you (alight), and instead, it will fall to the ground powerless.

2. If one maintains a pure heart by repenting of sin whenever it occurs in their life, then a curse will not have a legal right to alight and it will not alight upon the person.

Because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants that they should become a desolation and a curse, and you have torn your clothes and wept before Me, I truly have heard you, declares the Lord. 2 Kings 22:19

By allow sin to live in our lives and being unrepentant, we open a way for a curse to alight itself. By repenting of sin and living in the light of Christ, the curse will have no legal right to alight.

3. God can turn a curse into a blessing

Because they did not meet the sons of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them. However, our God turned the curse into a blessing. Nehemiah 13:2

God is more powerful than any curse. He has the power to stop any curse and even turn that curse into a blessing.

4. Your primary concern must be to have God?s blessing and not God?s curse

For those blessed by Him will inherit the land, But those cursed by Him will be cut off. Psalm 37:22

The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, But He blesses the dwelling of the righteous. Proverbs 3:33

He who gives to the poor will never want, but he who shuts his eyes will have many curses. Proverbs 28:27

And say to them, ?Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ?Cursed is the man who does not heed the words of this covenant.?? Jeremiah 11:3

Thus says the Lord, ?Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away from the Lord.? Jeremiah 17:5

?If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to give honor to My name,? says the Lord of hosts, ?then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings; and indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart.? Malachi 2:2

5. When others curse us, we should bless in return

Let them curse, but you bless; when they arise, they shall be ashamed, but Your servant shall be glad. Psalm 109:28

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Romans 12:14

We are to show the love of Christ. Trust the Lord to protect you from their curses and pray for His grace and mercy to change their hearts.

6. We need to be careful what we say as it does come back to us:

Furthermore, in your bedchamber do not curse a king, and in your sleeping rooms do not curse a rich man, for a bird of the heavens will carry the sound and the winged creature will make the matter known. Ecclesiastes 10:20

7. Living by the Law brings a curse? living by the Spirit of Christ releases one from the curse of the law.

For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, ?Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, to perform them.? Galatians 3:10

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us?for it is written, ?Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree?? Galatians 3:13

We cannot save ourselves through the Law, thus to live by the law is to be cursed. But Christ has redeemed us and freed us from the curse of the Law and we can now live by Spirit of Christ in freedom and His blessing.

So what would give a curse a ?legal right? or a ?cause? to attach itself to you, living in un-repentant sin, such as breaking the 10 commandments, or Christ?s law of love (loving God and loving your neighbor) or living in any opposite of faith, hope and love? Now abide these three, faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love. (1 Cor. 13:13)
