All humans started out shamanistic (sensitive to nature & spirits), before organized monotheism came along…
i’m native. none of us have shamans. that’s a term mistakenly given to us by anthropologists. and we don’t all believe the same things or have ceremonies in the same way.
i’m mohawk. one of the 6 nations of the haudenasaunee confederacy (iroquois) and we do not have the same teachings about the creation of the world as say the navajo. a google for the words native american and shaman will definitely pull up a lot of misinformation by non native people, mostly new agers, who don’t really know what we believe.
so here is a link of a site made by native people that highlite a few teachings of 5 different native nations. turn up your speakers and enjoy.
Here is a site in which someone collected definitions:
“Translated, shaman means “to heat up; to burn; to work with heat and fire.” The essential characteristics of Shamans are mastery of energy and fire as a medium of transformation.”
