Colonization of the Americas rarely has a balanced representation on screen, but this film comes close. In this scene, the clash of religious ideology and its repercussions for the land and its people are voiced not only by the Algonquin medicine man or shaman and his confrontation of the French Jesuit, but also between the Jesuit missionary and his French hunter/guide who has “gone native.”
Embrassed by music, Kathia Rock hatches her dreams in which the traditional sacred innu drum co-opted her blast. Shaman for the soul and the ages, she moves and infuse, with her art and guts, human resilience to its highest level of emotion, persistence and serenity. Here is her first music video, from her song “Shatshitun”, which means “love”.
