This form of purification (Buryat: ugaalga) is an essential part of every initiation ritual (shanar). Candidates have to be purified by the steam of boiled thyme. This video was recorded in Mongolia (Khentii province Cenkhermandal district) in the summer of 2005. The shamaness and the entranced shaman (husband and wife) are the masters leading the ritual.

Yes they are Mongolian Buryats from Dornod. Now they live and practice in Ulaanbaatar. The man is of baruun xuasai origin. The woman usually speaks with a thick Buryat accent while the man’s pronunciation is entirely xalx. Except when he gets possessed by his spirits.
