One can be a spiritual empiricist. William James, in his essay ‘The will to believe’ and in his book ‘The varieties of religious experience’ and in other works, tries to develop this. It is a very pragmatic approach. No matter what the origin of religious experiences is (man made, god made, organic malfunction, whatever) now that they are there, what are their properties, what can we do with them, what are the effects? His work is about a century old, but has lost nothing of its power. Also, his style is at least as brilliant as that of his brother Henry James.
