Had a few questions for those who insist that Christianity was purely an outgrowth of Judaism and that the pagans had no influence. Where did the Christians get some of their ideas? www.godvsthebible.com Questions Where did they get their idea about Hell? Where did they get their idea about the Holy Spirit? Where did they get their idea of the need for an intercessor with the divine? Where does the communion come from since it contradicts Jewish practice? Where does the idea of the ultimate sacrifice come from which fulfills the need for animal sacrifice? Where do pagan Christmas/Easter rituals come from?

    The Book of Daniel is the first OT book to detail a Resurrection of the dead the NT teaches a Resurrection of the dead therefore it does hold. The Resurrection of the bodies in the valley of the dry bones etc. There is no immortal Spirit in Judaism therefore the body must be raised for life to be restored. Before this they believed when you died that was it and there are references to this in the OT as well. However this idea as mentioned changes so the Christians are consistent here.

    There were other crackpots like Jesus(if he ever existed, Nazareth didn’t exist at his time) like Appollonius of Tyana. The Christian doctrine wasn’t established until the Council of Nicea, and even then the controversy continued. It took more councils to try to resolve differences and it was only several centuries later that the “definitive” version was established.

    @spellett1 Read the book “The Hebrew Myths” by Robert Graves and Raphael Patai. They show clearly the pagan sources of Judaism.

    @randall2020 such as?

  • spellett1 says:

    well done man! Btw you mispronounced the word sheol. It’s not shul (which actually means synagogue in yiddish) but she -ol. anyhow great questions

    I’ve been doing my own investigations into paganism to trace some of the roots of Christianity, and a few interesting things I’ve found are:
    The serpent was a sacred animal and a tree set apart (by fences or walls) was a site of worship in some of the earliest pagan/polytheistic cultures in Europe (The Greeks) – this definitely sets off a few alarm bells in Genesis alone, with Satan appearing in the form of a serpent and the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden.

    DeistPaladin, there are many references in the OT of the Spirit of God filling people with power (not unlike the Holy Spirit in the NT). Here are some:
    1 Samuel 10:6: “The Spirit of the LORD will come upon you in power, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person”.
    Nehemiah 9:30: “..By your Spirit you admonished them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you handed them over to the neighboring peoples.”
    Also see Numbers11:25-29.

    Great questions… I have yet to hear any reasonable explanations from christians addressing these discrepancies.

    It has been said, the reason God created mormons is to show christians how jews feel.

  • randall2020 says:

    @DeistPaladin

    Judaism is also an amalgamation of previous pagan beliefs.

  • macroheart says:

    Haha, skeptics always say the same thing. Well first of all Christmas and Easter are Catholic holidays from pagan Rome, and all of the other answers are in the Bible, all of the Bible is true work of God, and he is unchanging, but He can change the way His people live.

  • Luciddreams234 says:

    owhhh! you are really a moron!

    I agree with him, shalom!

    I searched the word “sacrifice” on Bible Gateway to find any references to an ultimate sacrifice or sacrifices coming to an end permanently in the OT. No luck on an “ultimate sacrifice,” but the prophecy of 70 weeks in Daniel 9 mentions sacrifices coming to an end, albeit it’s very vague on how they will end and says nothing about them being abolished for good. That doesn’t stop apologists from using it as a messianic proof of Jesus, though.

    December 25th was a Roman holiday, the festival of natalis Invicti (Birth of the Unconquerable Sun), or the Sun God. It was a big holiday celebrated by man, adopted by early Christians as the birth of Christ because so many were already celebrating a holiday on that day.

    Has anyone answered you yet?

  • jimbrown257 says:

    Does the idea of Hell not somewhat come from the Greek’s Hades? Check wik for “Hades in Christianity”; it says in the NT the word sheol comes from the word for Hades.

  • jimbrown257 says:

    @unknowndrone

    If you can get the atheist billboard bus to hit him you will really teach us a lesson.

  • unknowndrone says:

    I’ll pray every day that you get hit with a bus.

  • TheKingOfFresno says:

    Your parents should be ashamed for forcing the fear of hell upon you. There is no such place. Let go of your terror.

  • BeforeLifeHeWas says:

    If you read books on anti-Christianity to find the truth, it’s wrong. Your going to Satan to find out about God?

    Matthew 13:42

    “And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth”.

    Jesus spoke about hell! Don’t let this guy fool you!! READ YOUR BIBLE AND PRAY EVERYDAY!
