Helston in Cornwall Is A Great Place To Stay For A Family Holiday
Many families flock to Cornwall for a holiday each year. The region is popular for the sandy beaches, hidden coves, great food, myths and legends and top class tourist attractions. Helston – Cornwall is said to have been named after a stone which the Devil dropped in that location during a fight with St Michael. He was taking the Hells Stone to the gates of hell when St Michael interrupted him.
That legend also apparently gave rise to one of the best loved traditions in the town, the Floral Dances. They are said to have started when the residents celebrated the victory of St Michael by dancing. Floral Dances now take place on the 8th May and attract lots of visitors. Nobody really knows where the dances came from but many people think it is a Pagan tradition celebrating the end of winter. These days the festivities include four formal dances which happen from early in the morning with the final one at five o clock. Meanwhile the town band plays all day and revelers follow it all through the town which is decorated for the occasion. The main dance is at noon and has the residents dressing in formal ball gowns and dinner suits.
Helston has a long and interesting history which dates back at least one thousand years. It was originally a port but that changed and farming became the predominant economic activity in the area until the tin boom. The appearance of the town is pretty due to the high number of Georgian and Victorian buildings. Some are now hotels and pubs so you can go in and enjoy the lovely interiors.
Looe Pool is a much loved feature of the town. It is a fresh water lake which was created when a storm blocked the estuary of the River Cober. This ruined the port but made a great place for
