Question by Atheistic Heart: Homosexuals, transgenders, punks, pagans, or anyone who isn’t considered “mainstream” who do you find to be…?
More tolerant and/or accepting, atheists or Christians?
I keep seeing questions saying “who’s more tolerant, atheists or Christians?” Well, I just want to know your guys opinions, since you are the ones we’re being “tolerant” or “accepting” of, I presume…(I don’t know if that sounds bad or not, I just don’t know any other way to put it, sorry.)
If you can be civil that would be much appreciated.
Fosho – No actually I see a few lesbians and pagans, as well as a deist if I’m correct so far…
Preacher – I believe there are no such verses other than “love thy neighbor.” And that, my friend, is why more than half of the world hates Christians. Due to that arrogance of yours. Sorry to say.

Generally speaking, atheists. There are caring, non-judmental Christians and bigoted atheists, but in general atheists tend to be much more tolerant and accepting of personal choices and lifestyles that do not harm others.
What do you think? Answer below!
Atheists, hands down.
atheists all the way.
Atheists. They may have that cutting sarcasm, but at the end of the day, they would fight for everyone’s right to believe in what they want. Chrisitans have shown no such desire.
This isn’t a reliable comparison. The Atheists who aren’t accepting people only attack Christianity.
According to a few people I work with, atheists.
@ ??????ƒ?? ß??çk???: And Christians attack atheists. Hell, the Bible attacks atheists/unbelievers.
i’d say, we (atheists) are more tolerant.
@strikly buisness: comedian, are you?
atheists by far. most christians tell me that since my views aren’t exactly like theirs i’m wrong…atheists listen to my views and then share theirs, then we discuss them. it’s not a matter of wrong or right, it’s the time and effort put in to hear me out and look at things from where i’m coming from.
Atheists.
Atheists, no contest. No atheist has EVER spit at me or damned me to a fairy tale land of punishment for holding hands with my girlfriend.
You notice the only people answering are atheists…LOL!!
Actually, some of both are the most tolerant and accepting, likewise some of both can be very cruel or oppressive
Well with any group you’re going to have people that do and do not tolerate/accept you. However, I have found that atheists care less about your beliefs and more on your intelligence. Being non-mainstream though, I do feel more comfortable with atheists than christians. Also tried to date a hardcore christian, ended very very badly.
atheists, christians are just bigots.
can you please show me in the scripture where God instructs us to be tolerant of things that his word speaks against? No where does he tell us to be tolerant of homosexuals, transgenders punks pagans as you put it. He instructs us to pray, he instructs us to witness the gospel of Christ to them but he does not instruct us to be tolerant of their decisions to do things that are contrary to his word…..
Edit: My friend you can love someone and pray for them and still not tolerate the things they do that disobey and dishonor God. Dont you realize that we do love them, this is why we try to share Gods word with them and pray they come to the realization of the error of what they are doing and come to Christ and not be condemned by sin ?
Atheists.
im a christian, and im tolerant of everything. but i don’t really like to use the work tolerant. that would mean im tolerating them, even though i dont like them. fact is i dont care if someone is gay or a certain race or a a different religion than me. if things are done in a peaceful manner i could care less. but i have seen Christians that feel very strongly about homosexuality. but from my personal experiences, atheists get really worked up about certain issues, and they don’t appear tolerant at all.
Atheists. This is a no brainer. Many atheists tell me I’m silly for my beliefs, but they’re not beating down my door telling me I’m a sinner and that I MUST have their happy fluffy god in my life to be happy.
The few atheist I know have never told me that people like me are going to burn in hell for eternity, but many of the Christians I know have.
Atheist. I’m sorry, but Christians just seem to keep condemning me to hell, and Atheist…well, just are more accepting in my eyes.
Gay man here. I think the answer is obvious: Atheists. I never had an Atheist call me “fag” or tell me that “I’ll go to hell unless I ‘repented'” or that “I need to be cured”. That doesn’t prevent that there’s a small number of tolerant Christians towards homosexuality, but, in general Atheists are much more tolerant when it comes to this matter.
To be honest, I don’t think it makes a difference.
If all Christians actually abode by the teachings of the Bible they should be more accepting, but then the Church hasn’t always been that approving of homosexuals etc..
But there are alot of atheist arseholes out there as well as really lovely people.
Not everyone practices what they preach 😉
Lovely Christian who gives you cookies and milk or sexually abusive priests?
Bit of a ramble there =)
Well, as an eclectic pagan I find that atheists are more excepting. That is not to say that a good portion of them don’t think I am totally insane, but at least after they say their piece they are done. They don’t continue to bring up the subject and bash me with it every chance they get. And actually we tend to get along fairly well…I believe in science and nature and for the most part atheists respect that. Christians on the other hand see it necessary to “save my soul” every chance they get and bash me over the head with their bible. Which happens to hurt pretty badly since it is not a small book. Anyway! If I had to be stuck in a elevator with an atheist or a christian, I would pick the atheist any day of the week.
*wave hand* I’m a Wiccan, bi-sexual woman (and vegetarian too, another minority) I try not to judge people based on their religion or lack of religion, and so it’s hard to answer this question. Most the people that I have in my life, Christian, Buddhist, agnostic, Jewish, atheists, etc are pretty accepting. There are some conservitive Christians I have trouble with and one very angry atheist. My problem usually has more to do with age – it’s people over about 45 or so that I found judge my life more then my peers or those younger (I’m 30) Of course I live in a liberal area (SF Bay Area) so that makes a difference.
It has gotten worst the last few months, with all the yes on 8 people – I don’t know what their religions always are but they’re usually very intolerant.
Well, being sort of in the middle and generally speaking, both sides attack each other on this forum. However, the Christians tend to get more bent out of shape when someone pokes at them. Most of the time I think it’s all good natured, but every now and then a real fanatic (both Christian and Atheist) gets on and well- things get kinda ugly…
Starjumper has an excellent answer!
I find some people in both groups to be very intolerant. Christians can be intolerant of those who don’t share their faith and very arrogant in their beliefs and I find some atheists to be insufferably pleased with themselves and their cold reason and “logic” and mocking of anyone who does have a spiritual belief.
Though I have to say there are people like that in all religions and cultures and that most of the Christians and Atheists I know are nice people who keep their beliefs to themselves and respect the fact that others feel differently. Now the Atheists and Christians here in R&S are a different story altogether…they just love to argue and insist that they are right and have all the answers and proof. I wish they’d give it a rest. No one has the answers. No one can prove a damn thing.
