The Book of Shadows (BOS) is a very personal tool. It represents the whole of a witch’s knowledge of the craft and chronicles the witch’s journey as he or she walks their chosen path. Some Books of Shadows record progress of not only one witch, but several generations of witches, having been passed down over time through a coven or a family of witches. Sometimes, the BOS takes the form of a series of journals. Some of the things that you will find in a typical Book of Shadows include: rites and rituals, spells, methods of divination, chants, information on herbs, magickal correspondences, Esbat and Sabbat information, healing techniques, initiation and dedication information, talismans, amulets, dreams, signs and symbols, in addition you may find personal information about those who kept the book at one time or another. The Book’s ominous name comes from the Burning Times, a time in history from about 1550 ACE to roughly the early 1900’s when witches were persecuted, often to a point of death, because of their beliefs. During such a time when the utmost secrecy was paramount for survival, those persons wishing to adhere to their beliefs and practices had to keep them to themselves. Therefore, the witches practiced their craft in secret, surrounded by the shadows of the night, often writing their experiences in their special book, which became known as the Book of Shadows. Another more recent theory regarding the origin of the term Book of Shadows, suggest that Gerald

@arisenhard I think you did a great job. I actually have a Large ring 3 ring binder also, that I got for my BOS…but then I put off making it. I always thought i wouldn’t like how the rings looked. But I am so impressed with yours the rings are irrelevant! PLUS…I really admire your organizational skills. My Mom is also a “Strict Virgo” I hear ya! 🙂

It’s time for me to get going with mine!! Thank you for posting and sharing this! BB

@hipretty Thank You. No I wanted to put them in plastic sleeves, but they took up too much room and I would have had to remove pages to make them all fit.

  • hipretty says:

wow it’s so nice…I like the “leather” taking it from the plain binder look. great job cutting out the negative…it really makes it look engraved or burned in!!!
do you have those pages in plastic sleeves?

@thecosmiced in the bible they say magic is the devil’s work. but there are people who call themselves christian witches. google that term and you’ll learn more.

@bubba74121 i don’t want to be like on charmed and have to flip through the book looking for what i need. I like knowing exactly where the information I’m looking for is.

  • bubba74121 says:

omg. glad i’m not the only one thats organized and ocd about their book like I am. it’s awesome and so are you. thanks for sharing.

  • StephyBabyz says:

@thecosmiced It is possible because based on what i know the Catholics adopted alot of Pagan practices and ritual is one of them.

  • PrueTigerWitch says:

    use hot glue

  • exotikk1 says:

@thecosmiced You can make your own personal book which can include info on the saints and their correspondances, archangels, Mother Mary and anything that reflects your current and expanding beliefs. My book is a little eastern beliefs and alot of pagan info on cycles of the moon, flowers/crystals that heal and lots of info on angels and using colours. If you work with what feels comfortable, than you are not going against anything because you are doing what resonates with you personally.

  • arisenhard says:

    @thecosmiced I don’t know I’m not Catholic.

  • thecosmiced says:

is it possible to have a religion like being catholic or is it against it to do this stuff????

  • Pyrivala says:

I’m currently redoing my bos and you have provided some wonderful inspiration. I agree with bekylou, I thought binders were a tad tacky by yours is seriously beautifully done.

  • arisenhard says:

Thank You so much for taking the time to tell me that. I know my video is a bit dark, I’m still new at this, but I really appreciate you telling me what you think.

  • bekylou says:

I always toyed with the idea of using a binder for a BOS but thought it would look tacky. You’ve proved me wrong, yours is beautiful.

  • angeldream1963 says:

  • hipretty says:

wow beautiful…I admire your organizational skills. I Love how you have written in 2 columns like in an old world style book /reference book.

  • WretchedWhoreJade says:

@izzyjessbell Thats the best way, I too have notebooks and then copy out the best sections. It’s a way to keep your BOS neat and tidy.

@WretchedWhoreJade Hi Jade, glad you liked my BOS and thanks for the comment. I have been following my path into the craft since the age of 14. I always had notebooks for my BOS, until I decided to get this book. Its not my only bos and i still use notebooks to write freely, and then choose the best entries for this book. Hope it will be in my family for generations to come.
    blessed be

Hi, I’ve been wiccan for 8 years now, and I just have to say your BOS looks gorgeous!!! I’m currently on my fourth, as I don’t use them as often as I should to catalogue my rituals. I do love the layout and style of yours, it appears very personal to you (as it should haha) Out of curiousity how long have you been a follower of the craft??
    Blessed be x

  • izzyjessbell says:
