When modern anti-Semitism emerged at the end of the 19th century, the Catholic Church was one of the most significant players, by constantly warning against an ever increasing Jewish danger.
The slogans used for these warnings and which Mr. Kertzer again summarizes were, among others: Jews are rapacious and merciless; they will try to get their hands on all the gold in the world at any price and will not worry about how many Christians they ruin in the process; Jews are unpatriotic, foreigner to the security and welfare of the people, etc.
“Each of these elements of modern Anti-Semitism,” so writes Kertzer, “were not only tolerated by the Catholic Church, but also actively represented by its official and nonofficial organs.”
So, the Pope really would have had reasons to apologize in Jerusalem for the contribution of his Church to the Holocaust. That he didn’t do this and that a spokesman for the Vatican said almost flippantly that everything had already been said has a distressing effect. Because his statement in Cologne read: We are not to blame at all; it was solely the Nazis.
