A strong pagan belief is that the natural world is embedded in all of us. One method of defining the landscape is by building monuments. The construction of tombs at the boundaries of territory illustrates to outsiders that the area is rightfully yours, since it belonged to your ancestors. A succession of ritual monuments known throughout prehistoric Europe, from wooden trackways to henges (stone or wooden circles), suggest the strong influence of altering the landscape as a way of defining territory within the pagan belief system. So what happens when people cannot lay claim to their territory by marking it with the graves or other signs that their ancestors lived there? In 874 AD Viking leader Ingolfur Arnarson threw two lengths of timber into the sea and swore that he would settle where they came ashore. They landed at the site of present day Reykjavik in Iceland.

@culturefilm Pagans do not only exist as hindus in india, I’m a Pagan from Canada, we are all over the world, we revere nature and wisdom. & We are growing in numbers once again.

This guy is cocksure about things for which there’s next to no evidence. There is no attested tradition about Arthur till 300 years after he is supposed to have lived, and real historians still debate whether he existed at all. If he did, he was pretty certainly a Christian, not a pagan–though his religion was probably as barbarized as that of the Franks was at the same time. That said, his general points about ancient paganism are valid. The series gets better as it goes on.

Good research. Pagans had saints who meditated and brought down true knowledge, without taking credit for it, they said this always existed in ether and i have just brought it down for the people. Pagans now exist alive only in India as Hindus. who have knowledge in their vedas, as why they worship sun, river, mountains, cows etc. Pagans is Natures Religion, does not have a founderer as it always existed in nature unlike the religions which were formed recently.

I was just reading the “Sagas reveal Vikings were first oceanographers” article in newscientist-online
speculating about Ingólfur trowed the “Öndvegissúlur” in the sea to study the ocean currents.
