It is not “performed” like a magic trick…. It is lived. It is a skill developed from knowledge, diligence in study, and talent.
Hope that helps.
There are not really any “rituals” per say in Shamanism at least not from a non shamanistic culture. What I did was learn what is called in western culture “core shamanism” which covers the basic outline of how to journey to the lower or upper worlds to work with helping spirits (power animals, teachers) to do healing, divinations ect. The journey is like a visualization meditation.
The best thing to do is to read up on it or even better attend a workshop.
I would suggest checking out Michael Harner’s website http://www.shamanism.org and reading his book the “Way of the Shaman” since Michael Harner is credited with the revitalization of what he called Shamanism.
Some other good books are
Sandra Ingerman “Shamanic Journeying: A Beginner’s Guide”
Thomas Cowan “Shamanism: As a Spiritual Practice for Daily Life”
Katie Weatherup “Practical Shamanism: A guide for Walking in Both Worlds”
All these books give great examples of the various journeys to find power animals, healing, divination ect. I read a few books and started to journey on my own for about year before I attend a workshop that was hosted by Sandra Ingerman and although I didn’t learn anything new the energy and experience was amazing.
Good luck on your journey.
There are lots of workshops to try out there and lots of teachers – some great, some not so. I’d really recommend checking out word of mouth recommendations AND tuning into your ‘gut deeling’ before choosing who to learn with – you want to be sure it’s a safe and sane teacher, and one you feel comfortable with.
Good luck – feel free to email if you’d like to know more.
Walk in beauty,
Taz
