Question by Nic: how does john donne use metaphysical conceit?
how does he use this in meditation 17, a valediction for mourning

Answer by Mrs. Ron Weasley
I did a group project on this a longt ime ago.. but here goes :
The best example of metaphysical conceit in the poem is in the famous “no man is an island” line.
Metaphysical conceit is an extended metaphor that combines two vastly different ideas into one.
Like comparing men to an island to show that man cannot survive on his own, that man is part of civilization, part of the world.
Hope that helps.
