An altar is really just anything you place things on to worship. A table could be an altar, and I’ve seen fireplaces substitute for traditional altars as well. Just decorate it with appropriate materials.

    Yes … I don’t have an altar .. per sa … and I celebrate …

Altars are a VERY personal preference … don’t feel obligated to have one …

No altar is needed, nor any other tool, unless you desire to use it. Most of my rituals use only energy and can be done anywhere.

If you’re looking for a *real* pagan ritual, that’s Christmas. When Christian missionaries converted the non-Roman tribes of Europe, they said Christ was born on the 25th of December, on the same day the Pagan tribes already celebrated the return of the sun / winter solstice. The only thing the Christians added to the holiday was Jesus and the songs about him. The tree is pagan, as are the gifts, the family, and the food. Later, in America, Dutch settlers who celebrated Sinterklaas on the 5th of December mixed with other Americans, so they decided to unify Sinterklaas and Christmas. Sinterklaas was a red-robed man who gave presents to children, had lots of little helpers and had a long white beard. Over the course of the years, Sinterklaas turned into Santa Claus, became fat, moved to the North Pole and changed his human helpers into elves. So Santa Claus isn’t Pagan either.

So if you want to do a Pagan ritual without an altar, erect a Christmas tree, decorate it, have Christmas dinner, sing some Pagan songs about the sun and winter, and you’re done.

Oh certainly. You can use something natural
such as a rock or tree stump, but you really don’t
need any material objects at all. The purpose of
an offering ritual for example is to thank deity for
your blessings, and this is done through a direct
communication based on transmitting a metaphysical
form of energy. You could do it lying in bed if you
put your mind to it. Other types of rituals also work
the same. Of course a proper setting does help
to put you in the right frame of mind, but often just
being in a nice natural environment can work as well
    for that.

    Blessings,

    Jean
