A shaman is a Indian tribal medicine man. They not only believe in healing the body, but also the spirit. They think that if the body is sick it is because the spirit is also sick. The only website I can think of right now to go to is wikipedia.com

The word ‘shaman comes to English from the Tungus language via Russian. Among the Tungus of Siberia it is both a noun and a verb. While the Tungus have no word for shamanism, it has come into usage by anthropologists, historians of religion and others in contemporary society to designate the experience and the practices of the shaman. Its usage has grown to include similar experiences and practices in cultures outside of the original Siberian cultures from which the term shaman originated. Thus shamanism is not the name of a religion or group of religions.
Particular attention should be paid to the use of qualifying words such as “may” or “usually”. They indicate examples or tendencies and are not, in any way, intended to represent rigid standards

Shamanism is classified by anthropologists as an archaic
magico-religious phenomenon in which the shaman is the great master of ecstasy. Shamanism itself, was defined by the late Mircea Eliade as a technique of ecstasy. A shaman may exhibit a particular magical specialty (such as control over fire, wind or magical flight). When a specialization is present the most common is as a healer. The distinguishing characteristic of shamanism is its focus on an ecstatic trance state in which the soul of the shaman is believed to
leave the body and ascend to the sky (heavens) or descend into the earth (underworld). The shaman makes use of spirit helpers, with whom he or she communicates, all the while retaining control over his or her own consciousness. (Examples of possession occur, but are the exception, rather than the rule.) It is also important to note that while most shamans in traditional societies are men, either women or men may and have become shamans.

I have been studying and practicing Siberian Shamanism for many years. I included a very good, very concise quote for you with a website at the bottom of this answer.

“Over tens of thousands of years, our ancient ancestors all over the world discovered how to maximize human abilities of mind and spirit for healing and problem-solving. The remarkable system of methods they developed is today known as “shamanism,” a term that comes from a Siberian tribal word for its practitioners: “shaman” (pronounced SHAH-mahn). Shamans are a type of medicine man or woman especially distinguished by the use of journeys to hidden worlds otherwise mainly known through myth, dream, and near-death experiences.”

There are so many different forms of Shamanism: Celtic, Siberian, Nordic, Native and Indigents Peoples, Central and South American Native, etc. In Western culture, it is slowly being accepted, although many people still see Shamanism and Shamans as weired, peculiar, even nuts. There is so much to write about; where to begin? If you are interested in studying or just learning more, read a brief summary about the different types of Shamanism, the practices, the rituals, the cultures. I chose to study Siberian Shamanism, which in itself is very vast, because my ancestors were from Western Siberia.
