Question by Dudette: Shouldn’t kids be allowed to listen to the music they want?
Most of my CDs are gothic-rock, punk rock and metal, but my parents found out and took them away. I don’t understand. My mom said, “I don’t care if you listen to punk or metal or whatever.” so after hiding my music tastes since I was 12, I told her. She probably thought I was listening to Green Day and Disturbed or something…but, no, I listen to stuff like Alien Sex Fiend and Emperor, so she ended up taking away all my CDs that have cursing on them or that mention burning down churches/death/pagan stuff. Now I’m only left with my jazz, classical, and blues music and some of my alternative rock. The thing is, lyrics aren’t even important to me. Most of the time in punk and metal, I can’t even understand a word the vocalist is saying. I just love the anger in punk and the darkness in metal, even though I’m not an angry or dark person…I mean, I have pictures of fairies and flowers and my bedroom walls! I’m a Christian, I don’t curse, I don’t practice the pagan or satanic religion (although I have many books on them), I get As and Bs in school, and I haven’t acted out since middle school, which was before I started listening to this music. I don’t understand it! My brother listens to Coldplay and is twenty times more violent than me!

My parents also said, “Why would you want to listen to music as disgusting as that? Face it, it’s just terrible sounding music.”
But that’s opinion! Bubblegum Christian pop and R&B sound awful to me but they love it.

Questions:
Has this ever happened to you? Did you get over it and stop listening to your music or did you fight your parents? Don’t you think kids should be able to listen to whatever music they want?
oops. Sorry this is the wrong category. I wasn’t paying attention and the question automatically went here.
I know God doesn’t care what I listen to. But my parents do, and if I disobbey my parents, I’m disobeying God. 🙁
I don’t have friends. They’re kind of worried about me because of that.

I think as long as the music doesn’t have swearing in it.

kids should be allowed to listen to whatever they want as long as it isn’t country, country-western, Christian rock, or anything else as lame

It only matters what is in your heart. God knows that.

Here’s another one, why does god care what we eat, how we dress, and how we look?

    Rules made by PEOPLE!

Happened to me as a kid. they kept pushing me into their religion so hard that in the end they proved to me gods malevolent nature.

A kid should be allowed to listen to and believe what they want. if they had done that I probably would have been a lot less angry.

I would probably be considered a metalhead, perhaps your parents are concerned about your well being. The friends you pick will likely be influenced by what you listen to, and will likely impact your future success.

That’s funny,,,you just made me remember when my dad took away my Black Sabbath albums. I guess it happens to every generation. I don’t really care for my son’s rap music, but I’m not going to forbid it, as long as I can’t hear it, that is.

I don’t believe any type of music to be inherently sinful.

  • Pope Bean I says:

I don’t really care what lyrics/content the music has. If a child listens to music with criminal content, or is so easily influenced that he/she becomes what his/her music talks about, that child’s parents flat out SUCK. In that situation, it’s the parents’ fault, not the music’s fault.

Besides, it’s not like hiding kids from bad music is going to hide them from turning bad. Hell, Charles Manson based his whole apocalyptic war theory on a song by the Beatles. He didn’t base it on something that described, in detail, the themes in a lot of today’s music like prostitution, murder, suicide or drug use. Instead he based it on a song named after a type of slide. He based it on a Beatles song, which out of insanity he interpreted as a message to wage war.

Take it from someone who had “night visitors” (i.e. demons) in his room after listening to artists who will remain nameless…. the enemy wants you to think all music is harmless, but he used to make music himself and is quite adept at using it to harm people. God definitely cares about what you listen to, I had to chose between him and punk many years ago, thankfully I made the right choice. Please don’t waste your time, learn from my mistakes!

I’m glad your question got misplaced here. I’m a father of two teenagers. My daughter when she was around 13 yrs old went through her “goth” stage and what I’m sure was driven mostly out of a desire to challenge my authority, she kept insisting on getting Marilyn Manson music. At first I said “you don’t have your own money and I don’t think its responsible parenting for me to buy music that has parental advisories on them.” She’s a pretty smart girl though so she asked if she could download it for free. I stressed the importance of honouring the rules of the house, swearing is not acceptable from parents or children so why should it be OK for Mr. Manson. She asked Can I have some posters of him for my room? If you had money maybe I said. How about if I draw pictures of him (she’s an amazing artist) DOH!!!
Around this time I ran into a friend from Church who’s daughter made mine look like an angel (visually not behaviorally) His daughter had safety pins on pretty much every place you can think of ears, nose, eyebrows etc. I asked how he dealt with it and it stuck with me, he said “If it’s not illegal or immoral… get over it.” It really changed the way I thought about it after that, the question is is swearing immoral?
Anyways my daughter eventually grew out of her rebelious stage, you will too someday. Feel free to share this answer with your parents it may help clear the air for new dialogue.

Oh, and in your “goth stage” please do not practice “cutting” it hurts everyone including yourself and theres no one that can stop it but you. Your parents can’t hide every blade and knife in the house, if you want to cut you’ll find a way. I hope you never do. My daughter did for a short time, now she looks back at it as the lowest part of her young life. She graduates this year and is now 17yrs old.

    Peace; Jacques

There are two parts to the answer.

    1) your parents are responsible before God to make sure that what enters you makes you God fearing.

    2) you are to honor your parents, even if you do not like what they say, because you love God and want to please Him.

  • BPCB says:

Negative music evokes negative emotions. You are a child. You are influenced by everything you invite into your world. Your parents would be negligent if they didn’t take the music from you. You should also get rid of all your occult books. You’re playing with fire and you don’t even know it. Move away from the dark side and look toward the light.
Listen to your mom and dad. They have your best interest at heart.

  • Mr.Quix says:

Listen to your Parents and yes the Lord does care what you listen to..,,,,,,,

Your soul and physical body are sustained by a constant stream of energy/light from the Lord (you couldn’t live without his light) negative and hard rock music forces the energy into your lower chakras where it is released in a violent action. When you listen to very destructive and extremely negative music your light is forced out of your chakras, leaving your energy field wide open to demons and dark forces that enter and manipulate you (the same goes for everyone else by the way)

Positive music like Mozart and Beethoven and Handle causes God’s energy to flow up in the right direction to your higher chakras where it was intended to go.
