I’m replying to your question because your question is quite controversial, for reasons you might not be aware of.
But first:
There is no one type of vision quest. There are hundreds of Native nations, and not all nations traditionally or presently practice(d) vision quests. So there is no such thing as “the” vision quest. As to the term “ancient,” it is also improper here. Many contemporary Native folks currently practice this religious ritual. Some nations of the southeastern woodlands do, some do not. Vision quests are most commonly associated with Plains nations, but are not exclusive to these nations. The Lakota, for example, consider vision quest to be one of their seven most sacred rituals.
Native folks generally do not go around giving out this sort of information, because quite often, non-Native folks unthinkingly and improperly borrow/appropriate/steal and perform elements of these highly sacred rituals. Native peoples are generally offended and disgusted by the performance of such activities by Non-native folks.
(Imagine non-Jews learning a few facts about a bris [ritual of circumcision] and deciding to perform it on themselves for their own individual spiritual reasons. That’s exactly how inappropriate and dangerous Native folks believe it is for non-Natives to perform vision quests.)
Please see the website below for more information on this.
If you are interested in furthering your understanding of the religious practices of a particular Native nation, there are many appropriate and ethical ways to go about it. I would suggest beginning by doing some reading about the history and culture of the nation in which you’re interested.
Best wishes!

Professor X, you are a very articulate individual.
I do agree with this answer, and as a native american I do find it offensive in some context’s. You should be stating your intentions and have a mentor/guide to help you on your path, not just deciding it seems cool so do it, you will be needing to do preperation for this one step in a lifetime journey.
I suggest you seek out an elder and make an offering with your request for that information; which is the proper way.
First there is no such thing-except for a bad 80’s movie title
Second, I know what you mean and that is NOT to be discussed on the Internet and is NOT intended for Non Natives.
Period.
