The ‘Vattienti’ (an ancient and bloody rite in Calabria – South Italy) What you are seeing is the representation of the rite of Vattienti (= those who beat themself), a ritual of Holy Friday and Saturday in Christian Easter which takes place only in the village of Nocera Terinese in Calabria (Italy). The bloody nature of the ritual suggests that its roots are very ancient, perhaps pagan. In fact, in ancient times there were bloody rites especially in the religions of eastern origin, such as in the cult of Cybele (cult of fertility). Its probable that with the introduction of Christianity, because of phenomenon of syncretism, these tracks are passed inside the new religion. In the christian version of the rite, the man dressed in black is the one who has to expiate the guilt, instead the boy with the red cloth symbolize the new man, the purified man.
