The Catholic theologian Karl Rahner famously said “the Christian of tomorrow will be a mystic, or not a Christian at all.” Few people have impacted Christianity in this regard as has Fr. Thomas Keating. A Cistercian monk from St. Benedict’s Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado, Fr. Thomas has spent a lifetime in deep Christian practice, and in sharing the fruits of this contemplation with countless others. We were enormously blessed to host a dialogue with Fr. Thomas and Ken Wilber in April of 2006. In today’s featured video, Ken presents some of the foundational concepts of Integral spirituality. Video Rating: 4 / 5
“Atheism in the name of God is an abandonment of all religious beliefs . . . giving up the attempt to make sense of the world in terms of any fixed idea or intellectual system. It is becoming again as a child and laying oneself open to reality as it is actually and directly felt, experiencing it without trying to categorize, identify or name it.” -Alan Watts Video Rating: 4 / 5
Father Keating is being quiet because Trappist monks are really into not speaking unless it’s necessary, which probably seems strange to most Americans who are used to non stop talking even when very little is actually being said. Keating probably feels like Ken is doing a good job of explaining his point and might feel that anything said in addition would be superfluous.
Your own guidance, coming from Ken’s words, can take you from seeking a state to embodying a “stage” of higher development. In other words, Ken’s words are your own swords slashing through your identifications, confusion, delusions, etc.
I think a folk tale can tell you quite a bit about the human subconscious mind and it can serve as a metaphorical way to see your own situation and give you insight into what you should do. (through archetypes of the collective unconscious and hero examples, trials and tribulations) Your breath can’t do that. Look up “Joseph Campbell – the power of myth- part 2 – message of the myth” – good stuff
Yes. To me, quite a few conspiracy theories about aliens, good and bad aliens, vested interests and corruption are all too true. This all should be looked through an integral framework somehow. The integral movement currently may be moving that direction in some bloggers, at least one or two. I genuinely believe that there are extraterrestrials right herre on Earth and orbiting Earth. But I don’t claim to have any solid orange evidence. I might have indigo or green evidence, though.
Religion today is often used only as a excuse for other hitten ideas and agendas, like securing raw material for keeping our western culture running.
We need true integral leaders which don’t devide people but unite them. More problems are created today with the focus on total global control and power by a handfull men, who like to create uniformity, scarcity and fear instead of a free flow of creativity and abundance among citizens.
@MrGunwitch You are right in that I was a bit too dimissive before. thanks to the other person for asking me to listen to this clip again. I understood it much better than the first time. I think that looking at the video did not help. This time, I looked away from the screen and just listened. Of course, much of it makes sense and I need to know more about his theories and the research behind it. However, I am still wary of scholars+ talk Surely sprituality must be practised, not only discussed
Ken WIlber is the most profound mind of our generation. Read his books, and listen to his talks and you may learn something.
His insights only come through experiential practice…something which I doubt any Catholic can boast.
Forget trying to ‘prove claims’ and go meditate and see for yourself.
I stand by what I have said.
“Empty vessels make the most noise” is a very true saying.
When I have had a religous experience I will believe in them.
Just talking is just that – talk.
Can you prove his claims? Until then I say hogwash.
Hello. Your cynicism is getting in your way. This video is a part of a series. As for what he is talking about, listen again, if it doesn’t inconvenience your cynic sensibilities. π
He has done meditation for over 30 years and can go into a ‘religous experience’ state in 4 seconds as proven by some EEG readings.
@sirdouglas46 the Cicada song is very hypnotic
@tony225 The nail’s head has been flattened. π

That quote by Rahner in the info text is an urban legend develeoped from sloppy quoting.
Rahner actually said βDer Fromme von morgen wird ein Mystiker sein, einer, der etwas erfahren hat, oder er wird nicht mehr sein, weil …”
“the DEVOUT of tomorrow will be a mystic, one who has experienced something, or he will be no more, because…”
Very VERY interesting
@duncality
I think this must just be a clip from a larger lecture. Fr. Thomas Keating is actually a very good speaker.
I think more people should listen to Ken.
Thanks For the Video.
@duncality He’s a Trappist. Look it up.
cool
i like y’all too lol
Thank you for providing this, IntegralNaked.

I respect someone who’s opinion is open to change. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll have to change your handle π

Cynic you’re an ignoramus.

Religious war is a strawman, resource war that uses religion as an excuse or a motivational factor makes more sense
Any chance that people on Youtube comments can have a discussion about topics without calling each other names.
Everyone has their own opinion and they are allowed to have it without people calling them idiots.
Now watch as someone calls me an idiot.
I stand by what I have said.

Happy new cynical year for you.
