The Joffrey Ballet’s recreation of the 1913 Nijinsky choreography of Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps.

@ABookwormAndProud
For the most part yet…They tried to piece together any information about the original 1913 as possible
Does anyone know if this is the original choreography?
So cool
Really cool
@Zilizovuma at that time people had conservativ tastes. they expected them to dance elegantly like typical ballerinas. that piece challenged d crowd, although some actually loved it. then came d birth of modern dance.
Wonderful music. When I was a kid, people tried to get me into Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. It was okay but this is amazing!
@Zilizovuma: You also have to understand that this is just over twenty years after the premiere of the Nutcracker. Just as Beethoven’s third symphony before it, once the Rite was out there, there was no going back.
As to whether it was music or choreography/setting: a mixture of both, as? I understand it, in addition to the super-volatile political situation in Europe at the time. Remember, this is just before WWI, and tempers are getting quite nasty.
BASSOON XD
actually they rioted about the music to, because it was different. It has a lot of music that differs from what they were listening to then, and along with that these are not pretty little ballerinas, it was weird and unusual. People were trying to get out so the director counted the beats so the ballerinas could hear it over the people booing.
@BloggerMusicMan I couldn’t agree more!!!!!
@Zilizovuma
It was the content and costumes, not the music.
Popular rumor is that it was the music, but people were just mad about the pagan rituals and the VERY risque material of human sacrifice. The music itself was widely loved. I personally think it is way intense.
lol! why did the French people riot of this interesting performance?
Riot
Even though the filmmakers only showed a good 1/3rd of this, the recreation of this ballet in the film Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky is something else altogether. They show the riot that ensued, the backstage drama and Igor’s reaction to the whole ordeal. It’s incredibly thrilling, the film’s highlight by far.
@cch2449
really, wow.
@goomba45797 YES!!!!!
@cch2449 That’s not necessarily true. I just read an entire article about how the music could have effective auditory pattern-finding through its dissonance.
Two things to remember about the riotous premiere: first, the uproar was almost completely about Nijinsky’s choreography and the pagan story line. It had almost nothing to do with the music, which almost no one heard that much of in the din. Contemporary reviews of the premiere make virtually no mention of the music other than to name Stravinsky as composer. Second, Diaghilev wanted an uproar to generate publicity for the company, and he did everything he could to make sure he got one.
I think this video is the closest to the ballet 1913
thnks for upload
MEOW
@goomba45797 hahaha indeed, there’s truth in what you write!
I watched all the different versions of this ballet on Youtube and this is by far my favorite version. The interpretation of the music is spot-on.
@Dorianslover definitely were watching fantasia one too many times 😛
Personally I prefer the second act of this ballet, but the whole of this particular performance is done very well and the music is good (if not well recorded). Stravinsky and Nijinsky were both geniuses, I am so thankful to them that they composed the original music and ballet. 😀 😀
I think this is nothing but bull crap
