Question by Jason: What does this quote from the Matrix Reloaded mean in terms of spirituality, not in terms of the movie?
“Because you didn’t come here to make the choice. You’ve already made it. You’re here to try to understand why you made it.”
I want to know what this means, not in terms of the movie but in terms of what it could mean in a spiritual or metaphysical sense.
Thank You!
But doesn’t the use of the candy go along with that quote in some way?

I’m not sure that you can look at it in any way but metaphysical. It just does not work at a physical, this-world, here-and-now, world.
It is basically like the classic questions of Why are you here? Why do you keep on going? What is your purpose in life? And, it could be asked of almost anyone at any time, and presumes certain knowledge of a pre-mortal (or in the case of the film, in the matrix) existence.
What do you think? Answer below!
it would deal with predestiney.
you know The matrix is just a rip off of the Bible.
btw, Keanu is an atheist… do all of you act that poorly?
We all make choices even when we think that we do not. If you have a choice about doing something one way or another and you don’t pick either one then you have made the choice not to do anything.
Here’s an example from what Jesus said. Suppose someone said that they didn’t have anything against Christianity but they just didn’t want to be a Christian.
Matthew 12:30 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.
Jesus said that by making the choice which in your own mind is to remain “neutral”, you are really making the choice to be against Him because you are not helping out.
It means that Keanu Reeves is a surfer cop stoner savior.
repeat the question please.
destiny ain’t it….?
A hint of determinism in there..

Wasn’t it from Matrix Revolution ? I don’t think it had any spiritual significance.
Chicken=Egg=Chicken=Egg
We chose what life lessons will be learned before we are incarnated into this life.
I personally think that belief or lack there of is not a choice. I do not believe in deities. I did not choose not to believe in deities – I just don’t. I’ve already made that choice. So I am here to understand that.
Oh man, the Matrix movies are absolutely LOADED with religious symbolism, I wrote a 10 page paper for my Religion in Film class last year on those movies.
In this case, I think it questions the idea of free will – if God is “all-knowing”, do we REALLY have free will? Or is it all pre-programmed and we just THINK we’re making the conscious choice?
that we make choices all the time. we choose to love, we choose to hate, we choose God, we choose not to believe, we choose to practice certain behaviors, etc.
we often want to validate our choices through other people, through research, through polls, etc. but the truth is that no matter what kind of evidence, what facts or lack thereof exist…we’ve already made up our minds…
it’s why women ask advice about what man to marry and still marry the guy who’s no good for them…why? they had already made up their minds, they were seeking approval, validation or whatever to ease their conscience and gain confirmation of their correct choice…
Interesting, but not applicable in various major religions. This statement implies that what ever is monitoring our choices has pre-knowledge, but that the process of our making the choices helps us to understand why we made those choices or that by making choices we understand choices already made.
This is actually a weak statement in that making a choice rarely has anything to do with another choice in terms of understanding either choice. Or more precisely, analysis and review of the factors in making a choice (objectively as possible, of course) leads to understanding why a choice was made, while just making another choice sheds no light by itself.
