We’re here at Caesarea Philippi where Simon Peter proclaimed that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus responded by giving Simon a new name, Peter, which means “rock,” and declaring that “on this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” It’s interesting that Jesus would say that statement here, because there is a massive rock here, and it was literally called “the gates of hell” back then because a pagan temple to the god of Pan was here, carved into the rock, and many infants were sacrificed to the god of Pan here. So the fact that Jesus came to this very dark place and revealed Himself to Peter in this way, encourages me that no matter how dark a place you might be in, God can reveal Himself to you and to those around you as well.
