Question by Jabbu Mabbo: What is the relationship between science and spirituality?
This is how I see it :

the cutting edge of physics, quantum physics, has uncovered the fact that everything is interconnected and that everything is a self created illusion

this is exactly what mystics have been talking about for ages, it is even written down in the Vedas which is older than Christianity and the basis for Hinduism

It seems to me that spirituality which is on the left takes its own path towards the right

then science which is on the right takes its own path towards the left

spirituality and science which are clearly two sides of the coin meet in the center and reveal the same truths through differing means

I agree,

spirituality itself is a science, and science is a kind of religion
they can explain each other,
even though they are apparently opposites

No. Spirituality is a human phenomenon. If humans didn’t exist in the universe then neither would spirituality (assuming there are no other spiritual beings out there; which is probably a bad assumption to make). Science however is an objective look at the governing laws of the universe. Science will always exist with or without humans, or living beings in general. Without sentient life science would exist, there just wouldn’t be anything trying to understand it. Spirituality is a fabrication of a sentient beings mind.

Yes, I basically agree, that is basically the concept of hinduism and buddhism.

    except one word:

illusion is when you believe something is “true” and can be proven that it is not,

I would replace it with the word “construction” our mind forms a picture based on the experiences we have through our senses (to hear/taste/ …..),

according to Buddhism (which has developed based on Hinduism and the Veda) the illusion is, that we consider this mind and conscious as an independent truth and something “out if itself”.

One sentence which always baffles me is from Augustinus considered one of the fathers of the church,
he describe the source of “god” : “ex nihilo” = “out of nothing” and that 1400 years before we even had an inkling that there was a big bang ……

Science can only explain things observable by our human senses and our instruments.
Spirituality is there to attempt to explain the unseen that science cannot explain.
As Science progresses, it has and will continue to either validate or invalidate our spiritual knowledge.
Mystics are those that know spiritual truths through spiritual experiences.
Scientists know physical truths through experiments.
What we need are Mystic scientists.

    Well!!!!!

    It is true that

Spirituality and Science are two sides of the same coin!!

But, it is quite obvious that no one can see both sides of the coin together at a time..
    That results in the difference!!!

    hmmmmmmmm,
the relationship to me is obvious,
spirituality manifested from myths, fairy tales, magic, witchcraft and sorcery eventually taking the form of spiritualism and occultism,
and from there the unlimited possibilities are limited by the five senses,
where as all scientific methods, all apparatus, instruments and appliances are nothing more than to improve and widening the five senses,
mathematical formulas and equations embrace a definite cycle of relations within relations of natures patterns,
spirituality goes beyond ones five senses within the realm of incomprehensible mysteries,
where science grounds ones sensibility with cognitive values of meaning.

spirituality never fails whereas science fail many times. spirituality show good way to our life, whereas the science show way new invensions. purely, no connections between the two.

i’m not sure. science is something i learned in school, like biology, or marine biology. and someone told me that being spiritual means believing in a god or gods. i guess it’s because god created the biological humans and all the marine animals and sea life, like the fishies in the water or the big sharkies. 🙂

You start off by claiming that “quantum physics, has uncovered the fact that everything is interconnected and that everything is a self created illusion” and then you say mystics have been saying that for ages.

Actually, this is not at all true. Quantum physics says nothing of the sort. However, about 80 years ago, when we were just learning about quantum physics, there was this idea that an observer had an effect on the system being observed. Because the mystics liked this idea of self-created illusion, they jumped on that idea in quantum mechanics, then twisted the science and started making claims that simply were not justified by the science in any way. Well, in the meantime, physicist realized that the conscious observer really doesn’t have an impact, and it is the measurement process itself that effects the observed system. And as far as the everything being interconnected idea, that was never a real idea in physics. It is more of a gross extrapolation of something that really doesn’t have the meaning you seem to think it does.

It was the mystics pre-conceived notions that lead to this incorrect interpretation of quantum physics, it was not the quantum physics that backed up the mystic’s fanciful ideas.

Basically, what I am telling you is that your understanding of quantum physics is aligned with a set of mystics unfounded and incorrect interpretation of an idea that physicist only tossed around for a brief time before deciding it was incorrect and moving on to more reasonable ideas. That is, it is a wrong interpretation of a wrong idea. And… two wrongs, in this case, do not make a right.

So what is the relationship between science and spirituality? Science is the effort to better understand the universe based on evidence, data, and experiment. Spirituality is one way that humans attempt to make themselves feel more important based on unfounded assertions and fanciful ideas. I would say they are not exactly complete opposites, but more opposite than not.
