Question by iluvthePhillies: What must I do if I want to take peyote with the Native Americans of the southwest USA?
I am considering taking peyote for the sake of having a truly entheogenic and spiritual experience like that experienced by the Native Americans in the southwest USA. Peyote is not found or sold by anyone where I live, but I have heard that the US government has legalized the use of peyote in a truly religious context (i.e., it must be done under the supervision an experienced shaman and cannot be used recreationally). That being said, I am considering going to the southwest USA just to participate in a peyote ceremony.
Are there any things I must do and steps that I must take if I want to do this? Do I have to sign official government papers saying that I will take part in a peyote ceremony, or can anyone just go to a Native American reservation and take part in a peyote ceremony whenever they want?

you can’t just show up and join ceremony. the use of peyote is reserved for indigenous people who are enrolled in federally recognized nations and are members of NAC. you do not qualify on either count.
sounds like you are looking for an excuse to use peyote but call it a religious experience.
You, a non-Native, cannot possess peyote.

As for doing it “under the supervision of an experienced shaman”, Native Americans don’t even have shamans.
I think you may have watched the movie The Doors a few too many times. Taking the medicine in a meeting is totally different than what you think it is. No trails or trips or pretty psychedelic colors. You’d be better off finding some Tim Leary followers to drop acid with.
And FYI- not all Natives in the Southwest are NAC.
Oh good Lord.
dude, here i understand, im on the same page, I also want to do this and I did some research, here http://www.peyoteway.org all you need to know
