Vision quests are typically the term that refers to a native american practise, so Shamnistic in nature. But many cultures around the world have similar things.
The general idea is to either remove yourself from distractions and/or stressing your body to allow you to gain a different perspective on yourself, your life and the things around you.
Its my understanding that the vision part can be very profound and moving. But it is basically caused by stressing your body through a number of means to cause a mental reaction.
Every culture has a preferred form of stress and removal from distraction.
