What is Magic?

Magic is altering reality with your will
Magic is manipulating the situation to achieve your objective
Magic is using a practised ritual to achieve an expected goal
Magic is anything that cannot be scientifically explained or proven
Magic is hard to define!

Magic has been practised by cultures all over the world for thousands of years so there must be something in it. But Magic is not the stuff you see in a Harry Potter film (though wouldn’t it be great and scary if it was?). Real life, day to day Magic is used to help out with work, money, health, legal problems and relationships.

Magic, for many people, conjures up thoughts of the occult, satanism, blood lust and sacrifice. A very few dark, selfish souls are drawn to Magic because of these associations but, in reality, Magic is a very different thing from the Hollywood portrayal.

In fact, simple Magic can be likened to many other practises. For example, if you meditate using a Mantra (word or phrase you say over and over again), this could be termed as Magic. If you use affirmations, it’s Magic. If you follow the practises advocated in The Secret and other Law of Attraction teachings, it’s Magic. If you have a strong belief in something that is unproven scientifically, such as energy healing or other complementary health practises, it’s Magic.

And I think that’s great because it means that life is Magic – and so it should be!

When you perform a Magic ritual you are tapping into a strong power. The ritual, especially if it has been practised many times, is like a shortcut into this power channel. And like any power, it must be treated with respect and caution because it can bite.

Therefore, your intention when you use this power is important and, to keep you safe, there are two rules that you must bear in mind:

An it harm none, do what you will.  This advises that your intentions should be for results that are good and/or helpful. You should not interfere with anybody else’s will, tempting though it might be.
The three-fold law of return.  Anything that you send out will come back to you three-fold. So, if you are using Magic for a selfish or harmful purpose, boy will you know it – and not in a good way.

So, assuming your intentions are good you may want to start using Magic to help you achieve your goals. However, Magic is not an exact practise and there are many factors that affect its outcome so planning is essential.

Factors to consider:

The lunar cycle. The Moon has a tremendous influence on the energies of Earth. There is a belief that what goes on in the heavens (macrocosm) also affects us (microcosm). ‘As above, so below’ reminds us that we are individual worlds in ourselves and yet part of something much bigger.
The Moon phases offer different types of energy to work with: The New Moon is growing or waxing towards its peak and so has lots of energy for starting new things. A new job, project, house move or friendship spells should be cast at this time of the cycle.
The Full Moon is captivating on a clear night, not only because she is beautiful but also because we are experiencing her most potent energy. She is turned up to maximum. Any spell for healing or guidance will bring positive results at this time.
The Waning Moon’s energy is depleting so spells for removing problems or giving up bad habits are ideal now because she will take them with her as she goes.

The elements. Air, Fire, Water and Earth are the elements that make up our physical world. It is important to have all of these present to bring balance to your ritual. However, you can also use individual elements as part of the spell depending on your objective.
Colour and plants. Both colour and plants or herbs have their own unique energy vibrations. By choosing particular colour candles or particular herbs or essential oils for your ritual you will enhance the spell and, therefore, its chance of success.
Astrological influences. The Moon isn’t the only heavenly body that affects us. There are eight other planets in our solar system that we know of and, like the Moon, their movement in relation to our Earth has an effect. In addition there are lots of other objects in the sky such as comets and asteroids and moons from other planets.
It’s quite useful to understand what the planets are doing but this information is not as critical as the Moon phases unless the spell is particularly complicated.
Your health and frame of mind. Remember what was said earlier. You are tapping into a strong power. It is important that you are physically healthy and of a sound frame of mind when you conduct rituals and spell work. If you are feeling under the weather or unable to mentally focus, do not carry out any work. You are putting your health at risk and also unlikely to achieve your goals.

Precautions & protection

The last section leads naturally to ensuring you and anybody you work with is safe. As an individual you should always seek to protect yourself energetically and there are numerous ways to do this. It’s a question of finding the method that works for you and it should become a habit, like brushing your teeth.

Before casting a spell, Magicians will cast a Circle. This is usually part of the ritual. You can be as simple or as complex as you want here. The most simple is imagining a circle of light around you and you add complexity by preparing and purifying the space, honouring the elements and invoking deities into the Circle to help you with your spell work.

The Circle will protect you from entities that are attracted to what you are doing. It also acts to enhance the power raised during the ritual which brings greater success and results.

Raising power

After you have planned your Magic, assembled your tools and cast your circle it is important to raise energy which you then use to cast your spell. There are different ways to do this and the choice will depend on your personal preference and whether you are working solitary or with others.

In a group, the best ways to raise power are through dancing, chanting or drumming – or a mixture of all three. If solitary, you may find that quiet meditation is just as effective.

The spellcasting

Spell work can be defined as ‘prayers with intent.’ The energy that you have raised drives your intent in the vehicle you have chosen to take the spell into the world. This vehicle may be words or a physical object such as a talisman or candle.

A simple spell (1) for your own empowerment:

Hold a yellow candle and focus in to it your desire for empowerment
As you light the candle say: Mighty and gentle Lord and Lady
Whose loving gives me life
Inspire me to dream great dreams
And give me the strength to make them real

The Lord and Lady refer to the God and Goddess.

A simple spell (2) for attracting love:

On a red or pink cloth place The Little Shop of Charms Attracting Love Spell Mix
These herbs are pre mixed and blessed for their intent
Tie the cloth into a bundle with a white cord and hang in your bedroom, preferably in the south west area.

Summary

Magic is about concentration and focus, ritual and working with a greater energy (whatever your belief system). It is about understanding that you are part of something bigger and that you can influence your reality. With that understanding comes great responsibility.

So, now you’ve dipped your toe into Magic. Experiment but respect your limits and set your intention to bring teachers into your environment. Many Magicians have recorded their experiences in writing to help you on your journey and The Little Shop of Charms has a wide range of spell books, tools and supplies that will help you.
