a. – in order to become a shaman, one generally must be “inspired.”
If one is not charismatic, it is difficult to generate and maintain the trust that is required to be an effective shaman.
b. – entering into an altered state of consciousness is one of the hallmarks of shamanism. It is an essential part of the process.
c. Shamans often suck the poisoned spirit out of another persons body and bringing it into their own. Frequently the shaman simply spits out the spirit, but on occasion it is in fact taken into the person to be used again later against enemy Brujos.
BUT
c. REALLY depends on the tradition. Shamanism is a VERY broad range of beliefs and practices, and MOST do NOT internalize the spirit, they destroy or set it free. So this practice is generally not reflective of shamanism, but it is in fact a practice for which many shaman are trained.
