Question by Artemis: Christians, what do you think about these lyrics?
One of the subjects I study on my university course is Anthropology, and this year we have a very interesting module called Myths, Monsters and Legends. It’s about studying and trying to understand alterntive belief systems such as neo-paganism, voodou, the evil eye etc.
Currently I am writing an essay about it, and through doing my research I came across a book by Susan Greenwood, in this book she quotes a song by a pagan rock band Incubus Succubus, was just wondering how do thes elyrics make you feel?
They came to bring the ‘good news’,
to burn Witches, Pagans, Jews
They said they were the shepherd’s sheep,
they whipped old women through the street.
Then the turning of the tide,
from the truth they could not hide.
Now the darkest age is past,
the Goddess has returned at last!
Please keep this civil, I’m asking merely out of curiousity and not to offend anyone.
Haha no, it is not a Christian college, we study any religion as a myth, not just paganism 😉 Bascially when doing anthropological research on anything, you must remain objective and detached, and always remember that you are a researcher. So when I’m doing my anthropological work I’m an atheist, even though as a person I’m not, if that makes sense.
To meh: I am not a neo-pagan, I simply enjoy learning about things for what they are instead of making false assumptions, and worse yet false claims, such as calling Wiccans devil worshipers, like I’ve seen many people on this website do.
Many people got, get and will get persecuted for their religious views, not just Christians. Or shall I remind you of the crusades?

I think it’s misguided.
What do you think? Answer below!
thats not Biblical at all
Who’s the Goddess?
Lyrics schmyrics. Taken literally, they do nothing for me one way or the other. Set to music they might sound better…..
But I have to wonder about your college….is it a christian college? If not, it seems rather rude that they’d have you studying paganism of any variety under the heading of myth.
EDIT: Ok, thanks for the explanation!
What, that is the way it has been throughout history. Charlemagne went to the Pope & asked for $ & troops, as he was in the midst of his Albigenssian Crusade. He told the Pope “there are Christians among them”. Replied the Pope, “kill them all, the Lord will know His own”. Sound familiar? Kill them all, let God sort ’em out.
Stop whining, you aren’t exactly the group that has faced the most persecution throughout history…
Oh, wait, we are.
It makes me feel good that the truth is finally being told in a music form and is listened to by the general public. There are a lot of Pagan bands out there now days, some good, some not so good and a few really great.
You can hear some of the better ones at the Heartland Music Festival outside of Kansas City over the Memorial Day weekend. Also at the Pagan Spirit Gathering in Ohio the week of Litha and at the St. Louis Pagan Picnic on the weekend of June 7th.
Of course there are many good Pagan Festivals with really good music but these are some of the largest in the country. The event in St. Louis is the largest Pagan event of its kind anywhere in the country. Last year there were about 5,000 people there for two days in a down town public park.
I love the drum circles these events have. Nothing like a hundred+ drums pounding away deep into the night with bonfires and dancers and fire spinners and much fun and general misbehaving. I can’t wait for the festival season to start this year.
I understand there are going to have university courses in hairdressing.
That makes myths, monsters and toes a beacon of intellectual achievement…..
……and it makes me a grumpy old woman
As a Christian myself the lyrics don’t invoke any emotion in me. The lyrics allude to things such as the Salem witch burnings which occurred in a very small community by an extremist group rather than actual Christians, who killed 24 people accused of witch craft. The comment about the Jews probably refers to the holocaust which was not done by Christians but by Nazis who were actually atheistic. Christians actually attempted to convert Pagans by adopting some of their customs such as so-called Christmas trees, Yule Logs, and Mistletoe.
Christians have also worked hard to adopt principles of freedom of religion or to be free from religion. Christianity is a choice and God wants his people to choose him and being forced to become Christian is not possible. Christians continue to be the most persecuted religious group in the world. Look at Darfur, Ethiopia, China, and even the negative press Christians receive in America and Europe.
I tell you now, everyone can go around picking religions and making this a choice, you either have God or you don’t, you either accept Jesus as your savior, or you are not going to like that you carry sin, sin cannot enter The Holy Kingdom,
Satan and his followers will be burned.
To me, it’s simply a poem based on historical events. To deny that there have been Christians who misused our religion would be silly. But it’s also important to remember that persecution based on religious beliefs is a worldwide phenomenon and is also applied to Christians in some places. Whether I agree with a religion or not is not the point, what matters is that all beliefs and non-beliefs are accorded the same respect. God is the One who will sort it all out at the end.
