The Top 5 Most Evil Disney Movie Villains

Copyright (c) 2010 Nick Travis

A vital part to any Disney movie, the great villains portrayed over the years keep things interesting. They use fear, intimidation, manipulation, and sometimes even magic to keep our favorite heroes down until they grow and prove themselves in a final triumph over evil. Without these terrifying characters, there is no story, there is no excitement, there is no rush of relief at the end as they tumble to their doom. Here are the five cruelest villains and why we love to hate them.

1. Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty)Arguably the scariest of all Disney’s creations, Maleficent is the worst kind of fairy you don’t want around. She is beautiful, cunning, cruel and powerful; the self-proclaimed “Mistress of All Evil”. Her magical prowess is incredible, teleportation, shooting lightning bolts from her magic staff, and even changing into a terrible dragon. Maleficent also has the help of the diabolical raven, Diablo, along with an array of bumbling goblin henchman. She does not hesitate to ruin the life of a young, innocent Aurora out of misplaced revenge on the girl’s parents.

2. Evil Queen (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)One of the first evil stepmothers, Queen Grimhilde took narcissism and the quest to be the “fairest one of all” to new heights. Using her magic mirror to assure her unfailing beauty, she starts a relentless quest for the death of her stepdaughter, who’s only fault is to become more beautiful than the queen. The queen uses trickery and dark magic to get Snow White and finally poison her into a deathlike sleep so that she will be buried alive.

3. Ursula (The Little Mermaid)Ursula, the sea witch, was banished from the court of King Triton for her attempted takeover. She lives in a cave with her two eel minions, Flotsam and Jetsam, using the appearance of offering her magical help while really taking advantage of the “poor unfortunate souls” who come to her for aid. Ursula doesn’t even have to go after Ariel to get to her father the king, the mermaid is tricked into seeing the sea witch and making a deal with her of her own accord. At every part of Ariel’s time on land, Ursula finds ways to sabotage the bargain. She even disguises herself as a beautiful women to steal away the prince Ariel loves.

4. Lady Tremaine (Cinderella)The quintessential wicked stepmother, Lady Tremaine abuses her orphaned stepdaughter forcing her to work as a servant in her own home after her father dies. Lady Tremaine is the worst kind of person, belittling Cinderella, repeatedly raising her hopes before crushing them. She acts in such a subtly cruel manner, pretending to be caring and supportive of the girl, while slyly getting others to do her pitiless handiwork. Without any magical powers, just her own ruthless mind, she works endlessly to torture and ruin the life of her poor stepdaughter.

5. Frollo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)One of the scariest things about Judge Claude Frollo is his utter self-righteousness throughout all of his actions. Unlike many other villains who revel in their own evilness, Frollo always believes that he is in the right. He has incredible narrow views following his medieval Catholicism, and makes up for his utter lack of compassion with his vindictiveness and brutality. He kills a gypsy woman for no real crime other than being a “heathen”, and is forced by the Archdeacon to raise her orphaned child. Frollo does this unwillingly and raises the boy Quasimodo in a cruel manner, only to use him later on to fully eradicate gypsies from the city. He is consumed by his idea of genocide, which leads to conflict in his hypocritical soul later when he lusts after Esmerelda, deciding if she will not be his, she must die.
