when Bolt flashed his tongue as he crossed the finish line. After the race, he was applauded by his American competitor; Bolt is well on his way, after all, to becoming one of the greatest runners in competitive history. Born in Jamaica, Bolt began competing at a young age in his country. By the age of 12 he was considered his school’s fastest runner in the 100-meter. He first made his appearance on the world stage, however, in 2001, during the IAAF World Youth Championships in Debrecen, Hungary. A year later, in 2002, he participated in the World Junior Championships at the age of 15. He was by then 6’5” tall with a lanky, powerful build that demonstrated his talent as a runner. He won the 200-meter, setting a personal record of 20.61 seconds. Thereafter, the medals started flowing. He went professional in 2004, and began winning several tournaments. He became a nationally recognized figure, but he didn’t set a world record until last year’s Olympics. He then shocked the world with his performance, demonstrating his talent as not only the best competitive runners in the present, but perhaps one of the best runners of all time.
