There are so many books on Tarot readings. Most of them are very similar. One tip about Tarot cards, you are not supposed to buy your own deck. They must be given to you. Also once they are yours you are not supposed to let anyone else touch them.

The Bible. Form a personal relationship with Jesus and you won’t need Tarot Cards.
The Rider-Waite deck is a good standard deck. I personally do not have that one so I cannot say how accurate the rest of the “pack” is. The deck I have is titled “Universal Tarot” and it’s almost identical to the Rider-Waite. Decks usually come with small booklets explaining the most basic meanings associated with each card, which is probably the most important part. You can find spreads just about anywhere- my personal favorite is the cabalic Tree of Life.
I don’t own any tarot books, however I advise you to take caution when buying one. I’ve had enough experience in the occult to know that there are a ton of bad books out there. I advise you to look for a serious-looking book (just an observation- I’ve noticed most of the books one should stay away from have colorful new-agey covers and their titles suggest that they are about “goddess magic” or “love predictions” etc). Serious books are usually fairly plain-looking (to make a generalization) which do not mess around with “predicting your future” or any other stuff like that. They also generally do not look like the author is targeting teens.
I have been teaching the tarot for many years and am myself a tarot master. I have heard many other readers advising for beginners the Rider-Waite deck. I can understand the logic in this suggestion being that the Rider-Waite is considered the default for the majority of decks on the market. Personally, I find that deck seriously lacking inspiration. If I was to want a default deck I would use the Universal-Waite. It is the same as the Rider-Waite but much better colors. My first deck was The Spiral tarot and is still my favorite.
Find a deck that speaks to you. Search until you find a deck that melts your heart. Buy it yourself and sleep with it under your pillow for a few nights to create more energy between the two of you.
A great book to read is 78 Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack. Any book by Mary K. Greer and the Complete Idiots Guide to Tarot are good beginners book.
